How Long Will a Battery Run a Well Pump? (Real Math)

Short answer: the runtime is rarely the hard part — starting the pump is. A typical 1 HP submersible runs at ~1,500 W on 240V but spikes to 3,000–6,000 W for a split second at startup, and it needs 240V split-phase output that many portable stations don't have. A well pump only runs a few minutes per draw, so daily energy is modest (~1–2 kWh for a normal household); capacity buys days, the inverter buys the ability to start at all.

What moves the number

  • 240V split-phase is mandatory for most well pumps. A 120V-only station physically can't power a standard 1 HP submersible.   • Pump size and well depth: 1/2 HP shallow pumps may run on a large 120V unit; 1.5–2 HP deep-well pumps push surge past 6,000 W and demand a whole-home system.
